If you have an old, antique chandelier lying around the house that doesn’t quite go with the rest of your home decor, you can always re-paint it and restore it to match a room. It’s an inexpensive way to add some sparkle to a room. Dust off the cobwebs and wipe down that chandelier with a sponge to make it look as good as new. Antique chandeliers that are repainted with fun colors will look creative and funky, so head out to your nearest hardware store and pick up a few supplies.
1. Clean off the chandelier. Wipe down all dust and debris from the metal parts and crystals. Replace any bulbs.
2. Purchase an exterior spray paint can in the color of your choice. It should not be semi-gloss, but “Satin” is a nice selection if you want a slight sheen. One brand that works well on brass is Krylon Paint. A large chandelier will require up to two paint cans.
3. Bring the chandelier out to the backyard or garage. Lay down a towel or newspapers.
4. Use electrical tape to cover any parts of the chandelier that shouldn’t get painted. Make sure to cover all of the electrical parts.
5. Hold the spray an about a foot away from the chandelier and start spraying it in light coats. Do not spray too closely, or it will cause paint to drip down the metal parts.
6. Let the chandelier dry for 24 hours and then turn it around to see if you have missed any spots. Paint another light coat and let it dry overnight.
7. You can replace the chandelier shades for very little money. Each little shade might cost a dollar or so, and you can get colors to match the new paint.
8. Hang up the chandelier and let it be the centerpiece of the room!
