One particular chandelier style that will work in almost any room is a simple “Olde English” style chandelier. They would look right in any stately or simple New England home. Although they aren’t inexpensive, they have an old-fashioned, yet classic look that says “handmade.”
The Hinkley Company is just one company that produces chandeliers like this. They have a trademark chandelier style characterized by simple lines, bronze or black arms and plain lampshades. They are meant to blend in with mahogany or dark-colored furniture and would look good in front of a fireplace.
If you like antique-style chandeliers that aren’t too bright or flashy, stick to dark metals like bronze or black that don’t have a lot of flair. Crystals, glass, or beads are too busy for a room that has clean lines and/or rustic appeal.
The Hinkley Plymouth Chandelier 44.5″ is one such example of an Olde English chandelier. It features a 10-inch chain that holds the 3-tired, bronze piece. It has 15 arms, each one topped by a candelabra bulb and a plain, ivory-colored lampshade trimmed in dark brown. A piece such as this one will set you back about $1,500.
A simpler version of the same brand is the Hinkley Plymouth with only four arms, each one topped with the same sort of lampshade found in the bigger versions. It retails for about half the price as the 44.5″ chandelier.
The Hinkley Company also creates rustic chandeliers. The simple, black wrought-iron arms curl up to hold two tiers of nine bulbs, each one capped with amber-tinted glass lampshades. This chandelier will throw a warm fireplace glow around the room without screaming for attention or causing glare. It can hang down 31 inches with a 32 inch diameter. The cost of this chandelier model is just over $1,000.
