There are four main components to most chandeliers. It varies depending on the style of chandelier, but in general, these four parts are found on most modern or antique chandeliers: crystals, bulbs, collars, candles, and arms. Hundreds of years ago, most chandeliers were made from iron or brass and real candles. Nowadays, manufacturers use expensive items like Swarovski crystals.
Chandelier Candles
The candles are the component that actual lights up the chandelier. Without them, it would still be a chandelier, but it would have to have crystals or beads or shells instead. Candles are versatile because you can dress them up with tiny lampshades to match your decor. They are easy to remove and replace, not to mention affordable for any budget. Candles are usually golf ball shaped or tear-drop shaped to look like actual flames.
Chandelier Arms
The arms are the part of the chandelier that extend up or down. They are usually made out of brass or wrought iron, although you can find chandeliers made entirely of animal antlers or resin materials. Arm styles include S-shaped, roped, and fluted. The arms are topped with the candles.
Chandelier Crystals, Beads or Shells
These are the decorative items found on a chandelier. Crystals are more expensive than cut glass, and beads and shells are the cheapest. The most expensive crystal you can find is usually the Swarovski crystal, which sparkles quite a bit in the light. If you want to make a dramatic statement, use these types of crystals. On the other hand, if you want a low-key motif, choose beads or shells.
Other Chandelier Decor
Lampshades fall under the “optional accessory” category. One vital item used in all chandeliers is the suspension. Chains, ropes or hooks are common items used to hang the chandelier. Finally, if you use real candles, you need to have a wax catcher (bobeches).
